Insertion of dental implants: features, benefits, indications

Late visits to the dentist, untreated caries and other problems in the oral cavity often lead to the loss of a tooth or an entire row of teeth. Of course, losing a tooth is very unpleasant, but modern medicine does not stand still and offers patients the insertion of implants that look no different from natural teeth. What is an implant? It is an artificial tooth consisting of the root and the upper part of the tooth.

Indications for the insertion of dental implants

Some patients ask: When do I need dental implantation? Indications for the insertion of crowns and dentures are:

  • single defects of a missing tooth;
  • several teeth missing in a row;
  • destruction of the upper part of the tooth;
  • allergic reactions to the materials from which dentures are made;
  • the absence of the last teeth in the set.

The construction of a dental implant is very simple. It consists of:

  • implant;
  • screw;
  • an abutment;
  • a crown.

The concept of dental implantation implies a complex, labour-intensive and time-consuming way of restoring a lost tooth.

The procedure is performed in stages.

  1. Surgical stage. It solves one of the most difficult tasks – insertion and transplantation of the artificial support (instead of the root) into the jaw.
  2. Soft tissue shaping to create a reliable barrier against infection in the bone tissue.
  3. Orthopaedic. A dental crown is made that not only looks the same as a natural tooth, but also performs the same function.

The restoration of one or more teeth in the lower jaw takes about 3 months, in the upper jaw up to 6 months.

Benefits of the insertion of dental implants

The benefits of dental implants include:

  • High strength of the structure;
  • Longevity;
  • The ability to eat any food without fear of damaging the implants;
  • Secure fixation;
  • Proper function;
  • Aesthetics;
  • Safety for neighbouring teeth;
  • Absence of unpleasant and uncomfortable sensations.

Compared to other orthodontic structures (crowns, removable bridges), implants are characterised by durability, reliability and ease of use. If the place where the tooth used to be remains unused during the installation of crowns, leading to tooth displacement and other dental problems, this does not happen with the installation of implants.

The crown part of the artificial tooth is made of environmentally friendly, safe materials that are completely identical to natural teeth. It is impossible to tell them apart, even if you look at them closely from a distance. There is no need to cut the neighbouring teeth to fit them, so the procedure is safe. As the implants are placed under anaesthesia, patients experience no discomfort.

Contraindications to dental implants

Despite the many positive aspects of dental implants, there are some contraindications to their insertion.

  • Metabolic disorders;
  • Hormonal disorders;
  • Presence of diabetes mellitus.

All of the above diseases cause the body to reject the implant. They therefore make the procedure physically impossible.

Steps of insertion

Many patients are interested in how implants are inserted? The process is step-by-step, time-consuming and is carried out in the following order.

  1. Diagnostics are carried out. The doctor must prepare the patient, take a complete medical history, prescribe the necessary tests and carry out analyses.
  2. Preparation is carried out. At this stage the model of the artificial tooth is chosen, bone tissue is built up (if there is not enough).
  3. Installation is carried out. The implant is placed under anaesthesia by cutting through the gum and the periosteum. A hole is then made into which the implant is screwed. A plug is placed over the implant and the gum is sutured.
  4. Rehabilitation is carried out. This takes about 3 months and is necessary for the implant to take root.
  5. Prosthetics are performed. When the implant takes root and fuses with the bone, an artificial tooth (temporary at first) is placed on it, and after a month a permanent crown is placed.

If you choose a responsible dental clinic, the implantation will be of high quality, painless and quick. Patients will be satisfied with the final result and a perfect smile.
