Sinus elevator

Modern dentistry has a number of wide-ranging possibilities, as it can restore the functionality of the teeth, the jaw, and at the same time minimize the true nature of a person's oral cavity. First and foremost, many dentists think of such an innovative technique as implantology. This includes osteoplasty, which has made a big splash in the medical world. It is a branch of surgical dentistry that uses modern technology. Without special equipment and knowledge, it is not possible to implement this process.

Sinus elevator is an offshoot of osteoplasty. It is performed just before the placement of an implant. In fact, it is a dental surgery. Its main purpose is to increase the size of the atrophied bone where the chewing upper teeth are located. If you are in search of a quality sinus elevator, you can seek help from the experts at our dental clinic.

In the last couple of years, implants are considered one of the most advanced technologies. With its help, an expert can restore a patient's lost teeth, but the process does not always go smoothly. At times, additional procedures are required. One of them is considered to be osteoplasty.

Indications for sinus elevator

Insufficient bone thickness or atrophy is not uncommon.

Such problems are encountered with:

  • congenital pathology;
  • traumatic tooth extraction;
  • an advanced form of periodontal disease or periodontitis;
  • prolonged use of removable dentures;
  • bone resorption;
  • inflammation.

These are the main reasons why a potential patient may go to a dentist and ask him to diagnose and assist.

Read more about what a sinus elevator is

It is a microsurgical procedure. Using special instruments, the expert lifts the sinus. It is worth noting that this is often referred to as the bottom of the maxillary sinus. This is a shorter term, and it is easy to use. After this step, the dentist is involved in filling the empty space with a material that individually accelerates bone regeneration. Thanks to this it is possible to restore its width and height after some time. Only after these procedures are performed successfully, the implant can be placed. It is important to note that a sinus elevator is one of the most complex types of dental surgery. Only experts who have previously studied maxillofacial surgery and have extensive experience can perform the surgery.

Types of sinus elevators

Bone augmentation can be done by a specialist in two ways. They are closed and open lifting. It is worth considering both methods in more detail.

Features of closed sinus elevator:

  • the height of the bone in the area where the future implant will be placed must be at least 5 mm;
  • the bone replacement material is inserted through a hole created beforehand;
  • minimal surgical intervention;
  • the rehabilitation period is from 3 to 7 days.

The peculiarities of open sinus elevator:

  • can be performed when the bone thickness is less than 3 mm;
  • an incision must be made in the gums and a window drilled into the bone;
  • very complicated surgery;
  • the artificial material must be sealed with a membrane after insertion;
  • installation and rehabilitation take 4 to 6 months.

Special materials must be used for bone reconstruction. The dentist always pre-takes directly the patient's bone tissue. Different areas are used for this purpose. The dentist can use the hip area, the lower jaw, the chin. Thanks to this, it is possible to guarantee full compatibility of materials without probable rejection and deterioration of the overall health, but the patient will have to cope with two surgeries at once.

Artificial materials can also be used. They are developed in the laboratory and the filler is individual for each patient. In fact, it adapts well and does not differ much in its characteristics from natural bone material.

Another option is tissue of animal origin. It is usually provided in the form of blocks and bone chips.

On the methodology of closed sinus elevators

On average, this surgical intervention lasts about 30-60 minutes, depending on the experience of the dentist and the individual characteristics of the patient.

The following steps are distinguished:

  1. Preliminary examination to identify contraindications.
  2. Examination of the alveolar process and bone tissue. 3.
  3. Tomography.
  4. Radiologic examination.
  5. Drilling of the hole.
  6. Elevation of the maxillary sinus.
  7. Placement of the implant.

These are all general steps that must be performed by a specialist during surgery.

About open sinus elevator

This process is preceded by a comprehensive diagnosis. Plus, in addition, a treatment plan must be created. Experts say that this procedure is absolutely painless. It takes an hour or two and is performed under local anesthesia.

The following stages are distinguished:

  1. Incision of the bone tissue.
  2. Peeling off the mucosa.
  3. Drilling the hole.
  4. Insertion of material in place of the natural bone tissue.
  5. Suturing the mucosal fragment.

The operation is quite complicated. The stitches are not removed immediately, but after at least five or seven days. The patient will also have to visit our clinic after a month and make an appointment for the second examination. The doctor will obligatorily prescribe medication that accelerates tissue regeneration and antibiotics. This is done to minimize the risk of suppuration.

Contraindications

Any surgical procedure has its own indications and contraindications. Sinus elevator surgery is no exception.

The following prohibitions are highlighted:

  • heart failure;
  • impaired blood clotting;
  • chronic diseases;
  • infection in the maxillary sinus;
  • oncology.

Sinus elevators are also prohibited for sinusitis, polyps, maxillary sinusitis, and chronic runny nose.

What to do after surgery?

There are a couple of tips to help improve the condition.

Recommendations to speed up tissue regeneration:

  • it is better to chew food on the side that has not been subjected to surgery;
  • it is recommended to eat only soups, porridges, yogurt for the first time;
  • air travel is contraindicated;
  • it is better not to be subjected to physical stress.

It is also worthwhile to give up smoking and alcohol for a while, and to visit the doctor regularly for check-ups.

FAQ
Why is it impossible to do without a consultation and without determining a treatment plan?

At the first consultation, the doctor will tell you in detail about which teeth need to be treated first, about the condition of your gums and about which design you need to choose in order to fill in the missing teeth.

About what actions and manipulations need to be carried out. Learn how to take good care of your mouth so you don't have to go to the dentist as often as possible.

After discussing the above aspects, your dentist will draw up a treatment plan, guide you by the stages, timing, cost of the upcoming treatment, make, if necessary, computer diagnostics of the teeth and make an appointment for you at a convenient time for you to start treatment.

Why is fast tooth restoration so important?

It is worth restoring a lost tooth as early as possible, because delaying such a process can lead to unpleasant health consequences and undesirable costs in the future.

Patients who seek help for tooth loss too late unwittingly start the process of destruction of other adjacent teeth, because the load during chewing is not evenly distributed.

What is the popularity of dental implants?

Dental implantation is one of the most reliable and effective procedures that allows you to restore one or more teeth.

The method of dental implantation is now very popular, because it helps patients to restore lost teeth both in the upper and lower jaws without grinding pine teeth, which is always carried out during prosthetics (crowns).

With implantation, the number of lost teeth does not matter. Dental implantation is considered to be the only right way out of care for everyone, because the healing rate of implants today is over 99%!
