Treatment of periodontitis

Periodontitis is a dental disease characterized by damage to the periodontium by harmful microorganisms. It is a connective tissue localized between the root of the tooth and the alveolar plate. Periodontitis comes in several types. The most common type is infectious, which develops due to complicated untreated caries. Treatment of the inflammatory process should take place as soon as its first signs appear. Timely referral to a dental clinic avoids the development of an infection that requires surgery. Complications caused by periodontitis include maxillary sinusitis, abscesses, phlegmons, and other diseases.

Causes of periodontitis

Periodontitis occurs for several reasons.

  1. Infection entering the patient's body. Inflammation begins to progress when harmful microorganisms enter the periodontal tissues through dental root canals. The source of infection is often pulpitis, infections of the tooth under the crown. Improperly treated root canals can also cause the growth of harmful bacteria.
  2. Injury. An infection develops after the jaw parts of the face have been subjected to mechanical impact. This can be a blow to the jaw or a filling that protrudes beyond the tooth structure. Traumatic periodontitis is accompanied by acute symptoms.
  3. Penetration of infection due to poor treatment. Improper treatment of the tooth nerve provokes the ingress of potent medications (arsenic) into the periodontal tissues. Allergies to medications can also cause the disease.

The dentist determines the cause of periodontitis and prescribes a comprehensive treatment to eliminate it.

Symptoms of periodontitis

Periodontitis is of three types: acute, chronic and acute.

The acute form of the disease is expressed in the following symptoms:

  • dental pain of a pulling nature with a focal point of infection;
  • throbbing pain sensation (in purulent periodontitis);
  • loosening of the infected tooth;
  • general weakness of the body;
  • increased body temperature.

If one of the symptoms is detected, the patient is advised to visit a dental clinic.

The chronic form of periodontitis is characterized by the following signs:

  • any physical impact on the tooth is accompanied by pain;
  • occasional slight pain;
  • the appearance of a fistula with pus on the outer part of the jaw;
  • unpleasant odor from the oral cavity.

The acute form of the disease lasts for 3 weeks.

Inflammation of periodontal tissue is manifested by serous and purulent infection. In the first case, the periodontium swells and grows, its capillaries dilate, causing increased pain. In purulent periodontitis, inflammatory foci overlap. Such a feature leads to tissue expansion and mobility of the tooth row. The development of the infection is accompanied by acute severe pain. When pus escapes from the focus to the outside, the patient feels considerable relief.

Chronic periodontitis proceeds slowly without pronounced signs. This type of disease is characterized by three forms.

  1. Fibrous type. The periodontal tissues are thickened. This type is not expressed by any symptoms. It is usually determined by the dentist during radiological examination.
  2. Granulizing type. During its progression, bone tissue is rapidly destroyed, and periodontal fibers overgrow.
  3. Granulomatous type. The body tries to protect itself from germs, so a granuloma capsule appears around the focus of infection. Inside it, tissues gradually collapse.

How is periodontitis treated?

Acute periodontitis is treated in a dental clinic. The first stage of treatment includes the method of root canal enlargement, its cleaning and removal of all diseased tissues. After the primary manipulation, antiseptic treatment is performed. To create conditions for the exit of pus, the cavity is left open and a dressing is applied to it. During treatment, the patient is prescribed a course of antibiotic therapy. After 5 days, the dentist removes the dressing, checks the canals and their fullness with medicine. The manipulation performed ends with the placement of a temporary filling. Control X-rays are taken after 2 months. If the inflammatory process is stopped, the doctor fills the root canals and restores the upper part of the tooth.

With the chronic form of periodontitis, it will take longer to get rid of it. Fibrotic infection involves treatment as with the acute form, only without root enlargement. Granulomatous and granulomatous type require long-term therapy - the dentist installs a temporary filling for up to 6 months. The treatment process is based on regular radiological examination.

In the chronic form of the disease, the body's defenses are significantly reduced, so immunomodulators and drugs that stimulate tissue regeneration are used for treatment.

Complicated cases with severe periodontal damage require the intervention of a surgeon who performs tooth extraction.

FAQ
Why is it impossible to do without a consultation and without determining a treatment plan?

At the first consultation, the doctor will tell you in detail about which teeth need to be treated first, about the condition of your gums and about which design you need to choose in order to fill in the missing teeth.

About what actions and manipulations need to be carried out. Learn how to take good care of your mouth so you don't have to go to the dentist as often as possible.

After discussing the above aspects, your dentist will draw up a treatment plan, guide you by the stages, timing, cost of the upcoming treatment, make, if necessary, computer diagnostics of the teeth and make an appointment for you at a convenient time for you to start treatment.

Why is fast tooth restoration so important?

It is worth restoring a lost tooth as early as possible, because delaying such a process can lead to unpleasant health consequences and undesirable costs in the future.

Patients who seek help for tooth loss too late unwittingly start the process of destruction of other adjacent teeth, because the load during chewing is not evenly distributed.

What is the popularity of dental implants?

Dental implantation is one of the most reliable and effective procedures that allows you to restore one or more teeth.

The method of dental implantation is now very popular, because it helps patients to restore lost teeth both in the upper and lower jaws without grinding pine teeth, which is always carried out during prosthetics (crowns).

With implantation, the number of lost teeth does not matter. Dental implantation is considered to be the only right way out of care for everyone, because the healing rate of implants today is over 99%!
